Opened in 2018 by Kate and Peter Morency who after 97 years collectively in the restaurant business decided to do “just one more” after Pier 77 and The Ramp as well as Pedro’s in Kennebunk. “We wanted a name that implied it will be the last restaurant we’ll run, hence, The Bitter End. Not knowing when we named it that Bitter End is a nautical term for the end of a working line or rope. “Perfect”.
The only stipulation was that Richard Ellis, the Chef who opened the restaurant with us, buy the business from us in 3-5 years.
Richard worked side by side with Pete at Pier 77 & The Ramp for ten years, starting as a dishwasher. He is 3 years into a four year agreement to purchase the business after which he will be the owner & Chef of the Bitter End.
The Bitter End is a casual restaurant serving lunch and dinner year round focusing on delicious fresh food, starting from the bottom up, a diverse wine list you don’t expect to find in such a casual place and delicious cocktails all with a friendly price point & a friendly face.
Funky and super casual but somehow elegant and all in all totally amusing. A restaurant should please all the senses, not just the taste buds. All your “Bud’s” are dining out. Your ears picking up the eclectic mix of music, both nostalgic & contemporary. Your food arrives, your eyes smile, your nose is pleased and your mouth waters. The server not only made you smile but laugh out loud, while your eyes travel throughout the room taking it all in.
There are some fine touches along with a lot of serious sports memorabilia that you have to question whether it's real because it is too good to be hanging in a funny little restaurant in Wells.
Rare to go somewhere where you've had such a great time, you don't really know why until you happen to break it down, if you do at all. You just go back. This is what we try to achieve on a daily basis.
